Muscles worked
How to do it
- Stand in the machine with your shoulders under the pads and the balls of your feet on the edge of the step.
- Lower your heels as far as you can until your calves stretch.
- Rise onto your toes as high as you can with your knees straight.
- Squeeze at the top and lower slowly.
Form cues
- Full range: heels all the way down, all the way up on your toes.
- Pause 1-2 seconds at the bottom to remove the bounce.
- Push through the ball of your big toe.
Common mistakes
- Bouncing at the bottom: your tendon does the work instead of the muscle.
- Short reps with heavy weight: lighten it and get a full stretch.
- Bending your knees to help: the gastrocnemius works with straight knees.
Sets and reps
3-4 sets of 8-15 reps with pauses and 60-90 seconds of rest. Calves can handle training 2-4 times a week.

FAQ
How many reps for calves?
8-15 with full range and a pause at the bottom usually beats very long, fast sets.
Why won't my calves grow?
Genetics matter a lot, but the most common mistake is short, bouncy reps. Try pauses at the bottom and more frequency.
Standing or seated?
Standing works the gastrocnemius more; seated, the soleus. Do both.
What muscles do standing calf raises work?
They mainly work the calves, with help from the soleus.
