Meet the muscles
The gastrocnemius forms the visible part of your calf and works mainly with a straight knee, as in standing calf raises.
Underneath sits the soleus, which works more with a bent knee. For complete calves, train both: standing and seated.

FAQ
Why won't my calves grow?
Genetics matter a lot, but the most common mistake is short, bouncy reps. Try pauses at the bottom and more frequency.
How often should I train calves?
2-4 times a week with 6-12 weekly sets in total.
Standing or seated?
Both: standing works the gastrocnemius more, seated the soleus.
Does running build calves?
It strengthens them and builds endurance, but size needs loaded work.
