How to do it

  1. Standing or seated, hold a plate between your palms at chest height, fingers pointing forward.
  2. Squeeze your hands together hard.
  3. Press the plate straight out until your arms are extended, still squeezing.
  4. Bring it back to your chest slowly, keeping the pressure on.

Form cues

  • The key is the squeeze between your palms, not the weight of the plate.
  • Keep your shoulders down, away from your ears.
  • Move slowly and under control both ways.

Common mistakes

  • Easing off the squeeze as you extend: your chest stops working.
  • Using a heavy plate: light weight and a hard squeeze is enough.
  • Shrugging: your traps take over.

Sets and reps

2-3 sets of 12-20 reps with 60 seconds of rest, as a chest finisher or a warm-up before pressing.

    2. Squeeze your palms hard into the dumbbell so the chest takes the tension and the weight cannot slip.
    3. Press the dumbbell straight forward until your arms are fully extended, keeping it at chest height the whole way out.
    4. Pause briefly without letting the squeeze go, then draw the dumbbell back to your chest under control.

FAQ

What is the Svend press good for?

To feel and train your chest in a contracted position with very little weight. It's a good activation drill or session finisher.

Can it replace the bench press?

No, the load is far too light. It's an add-on, not a main strength exercise.

What weight should I use?

A 5-10 kg (10-25 lb) plate is usually enough. If you can't feel your chest, squeeze harder rather than going heavier.

What muscles do the Svend press work?

They mainly work the chest, with help from the front delts and the triceps.
